Pedro Kumamoto is a former student movement leader who crossed over to become a member of local government in his state of Jalisco in Mexico in 2015. After realizing that no one in government was truly representing the interests of people like himself and other young activists, Pedro ran to become the Congressperson for his district as an independent, running on a platform based on the defense of human rights, the promotion of democracy, and inclusive political participation. In 2015 Pedro won a seat in Congress while still in his 20’s.  “In democracy, either you participate, or someone else speaks in your name,” says Pedro. In the World Movement’s interview, he discussed how he has managed to succeed 80% of his legislative initiatives.
