Women in Namibia Call for Stronger Government Response to Gender-Based Violence

While the Global Gender Gap Index ranks Namibia sixth best in the world and best in Africa for gender equality, citizens still see gender-based violence (GBV) as a pervasive issue in the country. Afrobarometer reports that incidents of GBV increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the wake of the murder of a 20-year-old woman in April 2020, protests against GBV erupted across the country, leading the prime minister to strengthen policies against it. Still, in a survey conducted by Afrobarometer, citizens see GBV as a common occurrence in the country and one of the most important issues for the government to address.
