The Stockholm-based human rights organization Civil Rights Defenders has named activist Frank Mugisha one of two Civil Rights Defenders of the Year. In Uganda, where homosexuality is outlawed, Mugisha is Executive Director of SMUG, a Ugandan organization that provides protection, medical, and economic support for those in the LGBTI+ community. Despite facing much personal risk to his safety in Uganda, he has stayed in the country to advocate for the political rights and social acceptance of the LGBTI+ community.
