In 2018, Zambia grappled with political turmoil, a stifled democratic process, and limited political opportunities for the constructive engagement of young people. Physical violence among youth from different political factions was a hard reality. Amid this challenging context, two friends from opposing parties, Thompson Luzendi and Nawa Sitali founded Youth4Parliament (Y4P), with the vision to create a space for young people from different political backgrounds to engage in meaningful conversations and build a movement that would help launch the careers of youth politicians. Y4P’s efforts have transformed the political landscape in Zambia, from fostering youth leaders to running for office to mobilizing youth to vote and join an unprecedented emergence of social movements, Y4P’s journey is a testament to the power of youth determination. In this #CrossoverInitiative video, Nawa Sitali shares how Y4P has worked with young leaders in Zambia to reclaim the political space and increase youth representation in government.
