In a recent piece for Politico, World Movement Steering Committee Member and former foreign policy advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Svitlana Zalishchuk, called for Western countries to put further pressure on Putin by restricting Russian oil imports. As Russia continues a military offensive in Ukraine, they are simultaneously using gas supplies as a bargaining tool with European leaders. While Russia is able to restrict the flow of gas to Europe and divert the supplies to Asia and elsewhere, the country still heavily relies on oil exports. Zalishchuk urges leaders in the West to impose stricter sanctions on Russia despite the short term cost implications for their citizens, because until Putin’s resources are depleted, the war on Ukraine and the West will continue.
