Egyptian Front for Human Rights Examines Human Rights Situation in Detention Facilities

On September 11, 2021, the Egyptian Government launched a National Human Rights Strategy seeking to improve human rights conditions in the country. The Egyptian Front for Human Rights (EFHR) recently examined the impact of this strategy one year after its implementation, focusing specifically on its impact on detention facilities and retaliation against activists and those who speak out against the Egyptian government. EFHR found that no improvement to the treatment of those in detention facilities had been made since the launch of this 2021 human rights strategy. At least 42 people died in detention facilities, the majority due to poor detention conditions or medical negligence. At least three prisoners died as a result of torture.
