A new report published by The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy and The Freedom Initiative discusses the use of travel bans as a tool to repress the voices of those critical of the Egyptian government. Travel bans arbitrarily bar citizens from leaving the country, and have no laws governing their use, leaving those affected no way to challenge the bans. These travel restrictions have been used to prevent members of civil society from leaving the country for indefinite periods of time, infringing on their fundamental right to freedom of movement. The report calls for the Egyptian government to immediately stop enacting these arbitrary bans and for foreign governments to hold Egypt accountable for their abuse of travel bans.
