Zimbabwe: Human Rights Defenders Acquitted on Politically Motivated Charges
On 8 June, a Zimbabwean court ended the abuse of prosecution processes against human rights defenders Sandra Zenda and Kudakwashe Munemo, team members of the Institute for Young Women’s Development (IYWD), after acquitting them on charges of convening an unsanctioned meeting in contravention of the repressive Maintenance of Peace and Order (MOPO) Act. Zenda and Munemo, who were represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, had been on trial at Bindura Magistrates Court, since last year after they were arrested on July 29, 2022, by Zimbabwe’s police officers and charged with contravening the MOPO Act, convening a meeting that was attended by 80 people on June 29, 2022, in Bindura, without the approval of the Chief Superintendent of the Zimbabwe Republic Police commanding the Bindura district.
