On July 23, Ugandans organized a peaceful demonstration in the capital city of Kampala to express their grievances over government corruption and demand more accountability. This peaceful demonstration, largely led by Ugandan youth, was met by law enforcement units that assaulted and arbitrarily arrested dozens of demonstrators. Ugandan women’s associations have issued a joint statement condemning the government’s response to the anti-corruption demonstration, as it violates Ugandans’ constitutional right to freedom of expression, assembly, and association. Ugandan women join their voices to demand the immediate release of all of those who were arbitrarily arrested during the demonstrations; urge the government of Uganda to reaffirm its commitment to protect fundamental freedoms; and demand that law enforcement agencies uphold the law in their enforcement efforts.
