Voter participation remains a pressing challenge around the world. For example, in the US and Poland, only 54% of potential voters participated in the most recent elections. Many activists have expressed a desire to explore alternative voting mechanisms to address what many perceive to be an outdated voting system. Activists from San Francisco, Berlin, Minsk, and Barcelona held an online discussion to investigate the virtue of empowering online democracy in a world in which political participation remains low. Through their respective initiatives: Democracy Earth, Liquid Democracy, Reformation, and Civic Lab, these innovators are developing the concept of “liquid democracy” – the ability to delegate votes and implement new approaches to digital voting platforms. Watch clips form the online discussion and learn more about how these platforms are opening democratic spaces, mobilizing citizens, and changing the face of voting as we know it.
