On March 24, Senegal held presidential elections that resulted in the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the next president. Africtivistes, a pan-African civil society organization based in Dakar, Senegal, states that the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye is the result of a thirst for renewal deeply rooted in the hearts of these Senegalese people. Senegalese youth, in particular, have risen to demand a brighter future, driven by years of accumulated frustrations and dashed hopes. Leading up to the elections, youth activists were targeted by Senegalese authorities for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Africtivistes underscores that to build a more prosperous and united Senegal, the new administration must restore trust in democratic institutions, promote a fair and independent judiciary, and meet the economic and social aspirations of the population.
