On August 25 Bahey Eldin Hassan, a prominent Egyptian human rights defender, and director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), was sentenced to fifteen years in prison by an Egyptian court. The court found him guilty of arbitrary charges such as “disseminating false news that could undermine public security and public benefit through social media” and “insulting the judiciary”. Eldin Hassan has also been a victim of defamation campaigns and threats of physical violence from media close to Egyptian authorities.

The World Movement, along with over 200 civil society organizations, signed EuroMed Rights’ statement to express our continued solidarity and admiration for Eldin Hassan and his work.
