On November 1, 2018, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) launched V-Dem Graphing Tools, an updated platform to help democrats visualize data concerning “450 aspects of democracy for all countries in the world over the last 100 years.” The platform provides a set of interactive graphs that allow readers to manipulate the extensive data its researchers have published. V-Dem is a project based at the University of Gothenburg that collects data from around the globe to measure five identified components of democracy: “electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative, and egalitarian.”

The project’s team of researchers uses data to inform an annual report on the global state of democracy and a number of smaller reports, including country-specific and thematic reports. In 2018, researchers found that despite current challenges, global levels of democracy are still “close to an all-time high.” Check out V-Dem Graphing tools here, and check out its report on the state of democracy in your country here.
