Global Philanthropy Project (GPP) in partnership with Funders for LGBTQ Issues produced the 2013-2014 Global Resources Report: Philanthropic and Government Support for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex Communities, a comprehensive report which documents the international funding of LGBTI issues around the world.

The report spans 2013-2014 and includes 9,632 grants awarded by 431 foundations, corporations, governments, and multilateral agencies. Data is organized by geography, issue, strategy and population to display where funding is being funneled to, however, the report finds that a significant amount of funding for LGBTI issues fails to benefit the specific LGBTI communities it was designated for. Furthermore, the report reveals that for every $100 awarded by foundations, only 13 cents directly served LGBTI communities, and for every $100 awarded by government or multilateral agencies, only 4 cents specifically benefitted LGBTI communities.

The report’s data analysis also suggests that actual funding of LGBTI issues is often overestimated, especially with HIV/AIDS funding which is often classified as an LGBTI issue without showing how the funding actually reaches LGBTI communities. This gap may skew the information provided by the report and make the funding efforts of LGBTI issues appear exaggerated, but the authors hope the report will still serve as a “valuable tool,” and open up an important dialogue regarding funding for the community.
