A new documentary “A Thousand Cuts,” profiling the award-winning journalist and CEO of Rappler, Maria Ressa, and the Philippine government’s attempts to silence her, was released earlier this month after premiering at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. The film chronicles ongoing attacks against press freedom and democracy in the Philippines by President Duerte’s government, and draws parallels with his regime’s use of misinformation campaigns with trends around the world.

Building on a famous poem about the Nazi Holocaust, the film quotes a line from a local newspaper, “First they came for the journalists. We don’t know what happened after that.”
