On April 4, the United Nations Human Rights Council announced its decision to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the mandate of the independent international fact-finding mission on Iran. These are important developments to document, monitor, and report on the human rights situation in Iran. In her interview with Yalda Hakim of Sky News, Nazanin Boniadi, actress, activist, and member of the World Movement for Democracy’s Steering Committee, speaks about the importance of catalyzing international support for Iran in their struggles to protect women’s rights. “Unless we focus and pay attention, have a long-term strategy in place to help the people of Iran towards self-determination, this perpetual cycle of extreme oppression and crackdowns on the people, and then uprising will continue.” Boniadi also emphasizes the need to recognize “gender apartheid” under international law to hold perpetrators of systemic violence against women accountable in Iran and around the world.
