IRI Partners with OPIAS to Support Domestic Observation Mission in Timor-Leste
IRI and the Observatorio da Igreja Para Os Assuntos Socials (OIPAS) partnered in a domestic election observation program for Timor-Leste’s July 7 parliamentary elections. OIPAS is a Dili-based NGO founded in 2007 to develop Timor-Leste’s internal capacity to observe domestic elections. Observers were trained in election day procedures, voting and ballot counting, and incident report- writing for irregularities. In addition, IRI also sent a delegation of international election observers to monitor polling stations and identity and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the country’s electoral system.
