“There is no better school for learning democracy than through a democratic political youth wing organization. You learn how to debate, understand and respect different opinions, how to organize activities, and how democracy works.” In this article, Birgitta Ohlsson, Director of Political Parties at the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and former politician in Sweden, explains why independent political youth wing organizations are crucial to increasing youth representation in politics, fostering new leadership, and bridging the gap between civil society and government. Ohlsson also highlights that young people involved in political parties often become the face of their party among other young people, facilitating the party’s capacity to reach and engage with young constituents.
