On April 29, during the last plenary session of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, the outgoing deputies voted to initiate a process to change the Constitution expeditiously by authorizing the incoming legislators to make changes to Article 248 of the Constitution. By opening the possibility to reform Article 248, which establishes the rules for changing the constitution, the incoming legislature, controlled by President Nayib Bukele’s political party Nuevas Ideas, will be able to change the Constitution. According to the independent news outlet El Faro, changes to Article 248 would enable President Bukele and his political party to change the way the country is governed. It is widely speculated that the amended Constitution would allow Bukele to be re-elected to the Presidency indefinitely and extend the duration of the terms of any official in power.
