Democracy Update from Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency

The Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) has released its Democracy Update for the months of January through April, “Developments Impacting Quality of Democracy.” The paper discusses the positive developments in the growth of democracy in Pakistan as well as political changes and policies that have had a negative impact on the quality of democracy during the last quarter. According to the report, changes in legislation have led to improvements in the law-making process and greater parliamentary oversight of national security. At the same time, the report states that public officials face low levels of accountability and that the capacity of law enforcement to maintain order is undermined by a rise in sectarian violence in parts of Balochistan.
