Climate Observers Partnership – Petition Ahead of COP 29 in Azerbaijan

News

This year, as Azerbaijan prepares to host the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 29) in November, human rights organizations are calling on the international community to take immediate and decisive action to address continuous human rights violations in Azerbaijan. Those organizations underscore that the deteriorating human rights situation in Azerbaijan can negatively affect the credibility of COP 29. The suppression of independent voices in Azerbaijan is incompatible with the principles of openness, transparency, and inclusivity that are essential for effective climate discussions and negotiations. Human rights organizations also call on the government of Azerbaijan to release all people arrested for exercising their fundamental human rights, lift restrictions on independent media, and ensure a safe environment for all civil society and trade unions.
