Anita Vandenbeld, World Movement Steering Committee member and member of the Canadian Parliament, has been sanctioned along with several other MPs, by the Chinese government. This decision comes after Canada joined the U.S., the U.K., and the European Union in imposing sanctions against senior Chinese government officials in Xinjiang for their human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Muslim groups in the region.

In a tweet sharing a press release about the Chinese government’s sanctions, Ms. Vandenbeld said, “I will always continue to speak out against human rights abuses wherever they occur. This only reinforces my determination to continue working to promote and strengthen democratic institutions and rule of law, and to speak out for those who have been silenced.”
