On April 8, 2024, human rights defender Naji Fateel was released from prison in Bahrain. Fateel had been in prison since May of 2013 and had been sentenced to 25 years and six months in prison for his human rights work. He was released along with over 1,500 people who were pardoned by King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, to mark the Eid Al-Fitr and the silver jubilee of the King taking power. The Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) welcomes this development while calling for the release of other human rights defenders Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace and Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, both members of the Bahrain 13 group, who have been sentenced to a lifetime in prison. The World Movement for Democracy joins the GCHR in calling for their immediate release.
