On February 14, 2024, a temporary majority in the Paraguayan Congress held by the Colorado Party, hastily convened to expel the opposition Senator Kattya González. This move by the Colorado Party has been condemned by student organizations, unions, civil society, and members of the international community as it disregarded Senator González’s mandate gained through popular vote during the 2023 elections and lacked proper defense and legislative procedure. According to the Latin American and Caribbean Network for Democracy (REDLAD), this incident underscores a troubling trend of undemocratic behavior, putting at risk hard-won democratic norms in the country.
