The Forum on Information & Democracy has issued a new policy framework titled “AI as a Public Good: Ensuring Democratic Control of AI in the Information Space,” with more than 200 recommendations to States and AI companies. It takes a comprehensive approach calling for safe and inclusive AI systems, putting in place accountability mechanisms and incentives for ethical AI as well as governance mechanisms. The policy recommendations were developed by an international Policy Working Group with 14 members from diverse disciplines and 13 countries on all continents. Recommendations include, establishing standards for content authenticity, implementing legal frameworks to protect individual rights, providing user-friendly alternatives to recommender systems, and ensuring participatory processes in dataset curation. Acknowledging AI’s potential for both harm and benefit, the framework addresses challenges such as deepfakes, misinformation, and bias while leveraging AI’s potential to enhance news production and access to information.
