A new report commissioned by Internews titled Social Media in Afghanistan: Users and Engagement, highlights how women activists have taken advantage of social media platforms to increase their engagement in the public sphere. Social media is used by roughly 9% of the population who trend urban, young, and educated. Despite the relatively limited use, women have begun to use these platforms to join and often lead public debates on social and political issues. Tahmina Arian and her friends launched the advocacy campaign, #whereismyname, using social media. The campaign brings attention to the common practice in Afghanistan of men not using women’s names in official and unofficial capacities. The goal of the campaign is to break through this taboo and help women “be recognized as independent human beings with an identity.” The hashtag spurred public debate, received international attention, and has grown into a lasting movement. Join the conversation and help spread the word by following the #WhereIsMyNameTwitter feed.
