A Victory for Press Freedom in the Philippines
On August 9, Rappler, a Filipino independent news media outlet, co-founded by Maria Ressa, Nobel Peace Laureate and Chairperson of the World Movement for Democracy, received the final decision by the Philippines’ Court of Appeals voiding a 2018 shutdown order against Rappler. With the decision, the Court also ordered the restoration of the news organization’s certificate of incorporation. Local and international media groups celebrated the decision, noting the remarkable determination of the group in the face of multiple legal battles that started in November 2018. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines celebrated this victory for press freedom in the country. “May the justice achieved on this day signal better days ahead for other media workers also facing legal challenges related to their work.”
