30 Years of Democracy in South Africa: Resilience, Reflections, and Innovations

On February 13, 2024, the World Movement for Democracy co-hosted with the Nelson Mandela Foundation a public discussion in Johannesburg, South Africa, to celebrate and reflect on 30 years of democracy in South Africa. This discussion featured South African democracy champions Dr. Mamphela RampheleRekgotsofetse Chikaneand 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Chair of the World Movement’s Steering Committee, Maria Ressa. Discussants analyzed the democratic progress made in South Africa over the past 30 years while outlining innovative solutions to overcome current challenges. At the event, Maria Ressa also announced the World Movement’s 12th Global Assembly to take place in Johannesburg from November 20-22, 2024. “We’ll meet in South Africa in November to find hope and strength, learn from each other, and build the future we want.” – Maria Ressa.
