The 27th annual Forum 2000 Conference, titled “For a Democratic World Order,” was held in Prague on October 15–17, 2023. The conference took place in the middle of a challenging context for democrats around the world, almost two years after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and as autocrats try to expand their influence beyond all borders. Among the many outcomes of the Forum 2000, there are five ideas that can help democrats innovate the path forward. One, there is a need for an alliance for a democratic world order. Two, for democracies to prevail and reverse the expansion of autocracies and their aggression, democratic countries need to be strong. Three, it is important to strengthen ties with the Western Balkans, as a region connecting two continents with a strong desire for democratic governance. Four, democratic gains in every country count. Consolidated democracies need to step up their support to emerging democracies to see an increase in success stories. Finally, it is important to recognize a tech race as the struggle for democracy. Democracies need to proactively shape norms and standards regarding new technologies to preserve our rights and freedoms.
