The Civic Space Initiative (CSI) seeks to help protect civic space by supporting activists that face closing civic space and by fostering a positive understanding of civil society work among the general public.
The main activities of the CSI include:
- ORGANIZING campaigns and collective actions in support of civil society's legal initiatives at the global, regional, and national levels, based on the international principles and standards as articulated in the Defending Civil Society Report.
- STRENGTHENING the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association by facilitiating consultations with civil society, and by providing research and organizational support to the UNSR.
- PRODUCING a series of interactive videos profiling democracy activists and the work they carry out to counter the negative narratives told about their work.
The CSI is a joint initiative of ARTICLE 19, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, and the World Movement for Democracy. Support for the CSI is provided by the Government of Sweden.
