Asia Democracy Network (ADN) has just launched a report examining how China’s increasing power is affecting democratization processes in East Asia. Since the spread of democracy began in the region in the 1980’s it has grown steadily, but unevenly. Regionally, democratic norms still remain susceptible to shifting power dynamics in Asia. ADN’s report looks at both the processes of democratization in the Asia Pacific and the rise of China’s influence in the region to illustrate how China’s use of economic and political strength in Asia has the potential to undermine the democratization work that has taken place in the past three decades. By bringing this power dynamic to light, ADN aims to mobilize civil society in Asia to work to strengthen their democracies in the face of an emerging threat to their civic freedoms.
