On June 6, 2017, the office of the UNSR for freedom peaceful assembly and association launched FOAA Online – an online portal of user-friendly legal arguments for civil society activists who are fighting to defend those rights. The legal strategies have been aggregated from existing international human rights law, international treaty bodies, and regional courts for a comprehensive list of international instruments available. The tool also pulls strategic insight from consultations and reports written by former Special Rapporteur of freedom of assembly and association, Maina Kiai. At the UN Human Rights Council event where it was debuted, Kiai and other members of civil society discussed the briefs and themes featured in FOAA Online, spotlighting civil society organizations’ right to legally access foreign funding.
