In response to a decline in Nigerian citizens’ trust in government, Yiaga Africa is establishing People’s Assemblies as a tool to close the gap between citizens and local elected officials. People’s Assemblies are a deliberative democracy tool that allow for greater participation in policymaking at the local level. Within each local government area, interest groups are selected to deliberate and make recommendations on specific issues affecting their community, helping to bring the public directly in to the decision-making process.
