The Committee to Protect Journalists (CJP) released their 2021 prison census which found that 293 reporters were jailed for their work in the past year, setting a new record. Additionally, at least 24 journalists were killed as a result of their reporting in 2021.  China continues to be the biggest jailer of reporters, with Burma jumping to second place following the military coup on February 1. The CJP has recorded the jailing of more than 250 journalists annually for the past six years, reflecting a trend of increasing intolerance for independent journalism.
