Zimbabwe’s Institute for Young Women Development (IYWD) released a statement in response to the recent violent clashes between protestors and Zimbabwean authorities. The protests were triggered by the deteriorating economic conditions in the country and turned violent as riot police and military were deployed in response. The subsequent increase of heavily armed police and military throughout the communities has elicited fear among Zimbabwean women who are naturally more vulnerable to the country’s socio-economic and security crisis. IYMD urges the government to consider protestors’ grievances regarding the current economic crisis and “to uphold and promote the constitutional rights and freedoms of expression” of all Zimbabweans. The Director of the IYWD is Glanis Changachirere, who is also a member of the World Movement for Democracy’s Steering Committee.
