A Special Message on International #DemocracyDay

September 15, 2015
News
Today is International Day of Democracy. In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly issued a resolution encouraging governments around the world to strengthen national programs devoted to democracy, and also declared September 15th the International Day of Democracy. This year, the UN has chosen “Space for Civil Society” as the theme for this annual commemoration. In this same light, the theme of our upcoming Global Assembly in Seoul is “Empowering Civil Society for Democracy and its Renewal.”

Every year, we renew our commitment to the defense of civil society against resurgent authoritarianism. Civil society must be better prepared to help protect fragile new democracies against the danger of backsliding, to contribute to successful democratic transitions, and to guard against extremist movements and intolerant majorities. While democracy faces formidable obstacles, the prospect for its renewal should not be underestimated. From the brave activists fighting for dignity and freedom, democracy remains a source of inspiration and of hope.
The World Movement for Democracy extends its best wishes on this day to all those working to advance democracy in their countries. At the same time, we call upon all those who are fortunate to live in democratic countries to encourage their governments to support those working for democracy around the world.
