Approximately every two years, we bring together hundreds of democracy and human rights activists at a global assembly to discuss the significant challenges they face advancing democracy in their countries and the ways they are addressing those challenges.

Global assemblies offer World Movement participants the opportunity to take stock of the accomplishments they have made and the challenges they confront, and to build networks of mutual solidarity and support across borders.

Our assemblies feature a wide variety of workshops and panel discussions, and give activists the rare opportunity to meet face-to-face and connect with activists in different regions.

We also present our Democracy Courage Tributes to groups and movements that have demonstrated extraordinary courage in their work.

Steering Committee Statement:

"A Call for Democratic Renewal"

“What is needed today is nothing less than a revival of democratic will that will bring about a new period of democratic progress.”

The past decade has been marked by the deterioration in global freedoms and the emboldening of authoritarianist regimes to undermine democratic ideals at home and abroad.

The Statement rallies activists, governments, and citizens to push back against the wave of resurgent authoritarianism. To read the full statement, please select your preferred language below.
