Latin American activists remembered the legacies of Oswaldo Payá and Harold Cepero, two pro-democracy Cuban activists who died in a suspicious car crash five years ago. On July 22, four former Latin American presidents issued online video statements calling upon the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to conduct an independent investigation into the activists’ deaths. Many civil society members believe the car crash was planned by the Cuban regime to murder the pair for their human rights work. Family members of Antonio Ledezma, Venezuelan political prisoner and former Mayor of Caracas, expressed solidarity with Payá’s daughter, Rosa Maria Payá, herself a Cuban activist and the President of the Latin America Youth Network for Democracy (JuventudLAC).
