Nicholas Opiyo, lawyer and founder of the human rights organization Chapter Four Uganda, spoke with BBC about the importance of due process in a democratic institution. Although, Mr. Opiyo’s family were persecuted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), he is providing a former LRA commander with free legal services. He told BBC that he views the commander as a “vulnerable child abducted and turned into a killing machine by a rebel group,” and stressed the need to respect due process, even in dealing with a war lord.

To learn more about Mr. Opiyo’s work, listen to him speak at the World Movement for Democracy Eighth Assembly’s panel discussion, How Can Civil Society Respond to the Current Resurgence of Authoritarianism.
